The Ana Masry (Arabic for “I’m Egyptian”) Foundation is proud to present the performance: Ana Masry: Still living in the Square! An evening celebrating Egypt’s multi-layered identity through music, Arabic (& English) poetry, singing and more... Sunday December 11, 2011, 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Busboys and Poets @ 14th & V. St., Washington DC. Directions and details available at: http://www.busboysandpoets.com/about_14th.php

The performance is set in a symbolic square, where Egyptians have come together for thousands of years, and showcases our diverse and complex cultural mosaic. On stage, you will catch a glimpse of the essential components that inform our rich diversity, such as: Coptic, Islamic, Sufi and Nubian traditions. Weaving history, modernity, social commentary, fable, songs and verse, we present you with an artful expression of Egypt in its irreducible totality.

Come travel with us through time as we explore the multi-faceted Egyptian identity. The festivities await you!

The performance is based on the Arabic script written by Mohamed Maaty, interwoven with some of Yahia Lababidi’s English poetry, Egyptian songs written and composed by Ehaab Abdou, as well as Coptic hymns, Islamic Sufi chanting, Nubian songs and more.. performed by a wonderful group of amateur and professional actors, musicians and singers…
Ana Masry (I’m Egyptian) Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit association registered in the state of Maryland that aims, through Egyptian-American and Egyptian financial and technical support, to produce cultural and artistic materials that promote a better understanding of our common heritage and the multi-layered, multi-faceted Egyptian identity among us as Egyptians in Egypt and abroad.
